Winter Cycling in Hakodate Motomachi! Exploring History and Scenic Views on E-Bike & MTB

When people think of Hakodate, places like Goryokaku and Mount Hakodate often come to mind. However, the retro charm of the Motomachi area is also a must-see. This time, two middle-aged men took on the challenge of winter cycling with an E-Bike (electric assist bicycle) and MTB (mountain bike)! Riding through the hilly streets, we explored historical buildings and breathtaking winter landscapes.

What Makes Hakodate’s Motomachi Area Special?

Motomachi in Hakodate flourished as a foreign settlement during the Meiji era, leaving behind many Western-style buildings. The area is famous for its scenic hills, historic churches, and old Western-style houses. In winter, the snowy scenery enhances its nostalgic and dreamlike atmosphere.

With our E-Bike and MTB, we set off to fully experience the charm of this beautiful district. The cold was no match for the excitement of cycling through this picturesque area!

Key Tips for Winter Cycling

Riding a bicycle in Hakodate during winter can be a unique and enjoyable experience if you prepare properly. Here are some essential tips:

  • Dress warmly! Since the wind can feel quite cold while riding, gloves and a neck warmer are a must.
  • Be cautious of icy roads. Early mornings and nights can be especially slippery, so avoid sudden braking.
  • Take breaks to stay warm. Stopping by a cozy café can help keep your body temperature up.

With an E-Bike, even the steep hills of Motomachi become easy to conquer, making winter cycling a comfortable adventure.
